Is Crypto Card Cashback Worth It? The Math From 8 Cards I Tested

Bybit pays 2% cashback. Coca pays 1%.
On the same R23.99 packet of chips, Coca was cheaper.
Do the math.
Quick answer
Crypto card cashback is worth it when the cashback is bigger than the FX spread and fees the card charges on the same purchase.
On my $10 test in South Africa, that only happened on 3 of 8 cards: EtherFi, Bitget Wallet and Coca. The other five cost more than the mid-market price, cashback included.
Why this matters right now
ether.fi just announced $1 billion in card spend across 199 countries and 131 currencies (ether.fi on X, 17 Oct 2026: https://x.com/ether_fi/status/2111549926832549983).
That's a lot of people tapping a card for the cashback.
Over 30 crypto cards are tested and ranked on CardifyCrypto.com, and the same pattern keeps coming up. The headline rate is the best case. The spread is what you pay every day.
The one formula you need
Every time you pay in a currency your balance isn't held in, the card converts it. Usually USDC or USDT into Rands, Euros or whatever the till wants.
That conversion has a price. Sometimes it's a published FX fee. Sometimes it's hidden inside the rate.
Your real return on a purchase:
Cashback % minus FX spread % minus any flat fee
Above zero, the card is paying you. Below zero, your cashback is coming out of your own pocket.
If you spend USD stables at a USD merchant, there's usually little to convert, so most of the cashback stays yours. Check for a crypto to fiat conversion fee though. Bybit charged roughly 0.9% for that in my test.
What 8 cards returned at a South African till
Same packet of chips. Same till. Same day. At the mid-market rate it should have cost $1.48.

| Card | Base cashback (as tested) | Measured FX spread | Net cost on a $1.48 purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| EtherFi | 3% in ETHFI, 7-day lock | 0.51% | $1.45 |
| Bitget Wallet | FX fee refunded | 0.51% | $1.47 |
| Coca | 1% in USDC, paid monthly | 1.18% | $1.47 |
| Bybit | 2% in points | 2.53% | $1.49 |
| Wirex | 0.5% in WXT | 1.18% | $1.50 |
| RedotPay | 0% | 2.53% | $1.52 |
| Kast | 1.5%, locked 14 days | 7.93% | $1.60 |
| Oobit | 1% | 17.5% | $1.74 |
Base tiers only. Every number comes from one live purchase per card.
EtherFi was the only card that left me ahead of the market. 3% back beats a 0.51% spread on any day of the week. Just know that the 3% now lands in ETHFI and sits in a 7-day lock before you can claim it.
Bybit's 2% sounds better than Coca's 1%. It still lost, because the Bybit spread was more than double.
RedotPay has 0% base cashback, so there's nothing to soften its 2.53% spread.
Flat fees wipe out cashback on small spends
Kast and Oobit are the warning signs here.
Oobit charges 1% or $0.25, whichever is higher. On a $1.48 packet of chips, that minimum became a 17.5% markup. A 1% cashback can't fix that.
Kast stacked a small-ticket surcharge on top of its spread. 1.5% back against a 7.93% cost means you lose on every coffee.
On a big purchase those flat fees shrink to almost nothing. For daily small spending they eat the cashback alive.
What you're paid in matters
A reward paid in points or a token is worth whatever that token or points system is worth on the day you use it.
Here's what each card pays in, from my test and from the providers' own pages:
- EtherFi: the help centre says cashback converts to ETHFI when the purchase clears, then sits in a 7-day lock before you can claim it (https://help.ether.fi/en/articles/262374-how-does-cashback-work).
- Coca: 1% in USDC, paid on the 10th of the month.
- Bybit: points.
- Kast: locked for 14 days and only usable inside Kast.
- Wirex One: 0.5% on the Base tier. In my test, base cashback was paid in WXT, Wirex's own token, so its value moves with the token price.
USDC or USD-valued cashback is the cleanest. You know exactly what you earned.
Token cashback can be worth more or less by the time you claim it. That's fine if you want to hold the token. Just count it as a bet on the token price.
The cap is where "up to" lives
Most cashback rates come with a monthly ceiling, and the rate drops after it.
EtherFi Core: 3% on the first $2,000 of spend each month, then 1% up to $3,000, then 0.5% above that. EUR purchases get lower caps: 3% only on the first $800 (USD equivalent). Luxe costs $199 a year and lifts the 3% band to $10,000. VIP is invite-only and pays 4% on the first $50,000. Coca: 1% on the first $10,000 a month on the base tier, from my test. They advertise up to 8% on higher tiers.
Wirex One: 0.5% on Base, then 1%, 3%, 5% and 8% on Premium, Elite, Private and Bespoke.
Krak (US): up to 2%, and the rate depends on your average balance. According to Krak's own card page, the uncapped 2% Metal card needs an average of $50,000 in combined assets across Krak, Kraken and Kraken Pro (https://krak.app/card). Krak's posts on X say no FX fees, while the footnote on that same card page says FX fees apply. Check before you travel with it. A US Krak spend hasn't been tested on CardifyCrypto yet.
So when you see "up to 8%", ask two questions. Which tier? And up to how much spend?
So, is crypto card cashback worth it?
Yes, if you fit the profile.
Cashback pays off when you:
- spend mostly in USD or EUR, or in a local currency on a card with a tiny spread
- stay under the monthly cap
- get paid in USDC or USD value, or you're happy holding the reward token
It costs you when you:
- spend small amounts in a local currency on a card with a 2%+ spread
- use a card with a flat per-transaction fee for coffee and groceries
- chase "up to" rates that need a big balance or a token lock
My rule: pick the card on FX first and cashback second. A 1% card with a 0.5% spread beats a 2% card with a 2.5% spread.

FAQ
Is crypto card cashback taxable?
It depends on where you live. Krak's US card page says cashback is generally not taxable and tells you to speak to a tax advisor. Spending the crypto itself can be a taxable event. Get local advice.
Which card gave the best net result in testing?
EtherFi, in the South Africa test. 3% back (now paid in ETHFI with a 7-day lock) against a 0.51% spread on the free Core tier, as long as you stay under $2,000 a month.
Does cashback matter more if I spend in USD?
Yes. With a USD balance at a USD merchant there's usually no FX spread eating into it. Some cards still charge to turn stables into fiat, so check the conversion fee.
Why did a card with higher cashback cost me more?
The spread. Bybit's 2% in points lost to Coca's 1% in USDC because Bybit's spread was 2.53% and Coca's was 1.18%.
Is "up to 8% cashback" real?
It exists on top tiers. Base users start lower: 1% on Coca and 0.5% on Wirex One. Read the tier table before you sign up.
Tested vs claimed
Tested by CardifyCrypto: every number in the 8-card table, from one live purchase per card at the same South African till.
Provider claims, checked on their own pages on 26 Oct 2026: EtherFi cashback tiers and ETHFI payout, Wirex One cashback tiers, Krak US cashback and the $50,000 Metal requirement. Coca's "up to 8%" is their advertised claim.
