The best true Web3 architecture in the test, ruined by a $0.25 minimum fee.

The $10 test

One R23.99 packet of chips, bought at an OK supermarket at a spot rate of 1 USD = 16.182216 ZAR. At that rate the purchase should cost exactly $1.4825.

Charged
$1.74
Net effective cost
$1.74, very expensive on small spends

The claim vs. the reality

  • The 10% rate is strictly limited to purchases made with the native OOB token; stablecoin spend tops out at 5% after $1,500 in 90 days
  • Cashback is heavily restricted by region and asset
  • The killer feature is real: Oobit connects directly to your wallet, staying in crypto until you pay
  • You can pay with Bitcoin directly, but watch the fees

Real FX cost & conversion spread

Oobit is transparent about pricing: a 1% transaction fee or a $0.25 minimum, whichever is higher. In this test that meant a 0.51% fee plus the $0.25.

  • Baseline market cost: $1.48
  • Oobit flat fee: 0.51% + $0.25
  • Actual deducted charge: $1.74
  • Hidden spread: a staggering 17.5% markup

The verdict

Oobit's underlying technology is arguably the best on the market for true Web3 self-custody. But buy a R5,000 plane ticket and you pay a standard 1% fee; buy a R25 coffee and that $0.25 minimum hits you with a 15–20% effective markup every single time.

Score: 5.9 out of 10

Strengths

  • Direct wallet link with no preloading
  • Fastest onboarding
  • Pay with Bitcoin directly

Weaknesses

  • $0.25 minimum fee destroys small transactions

Who ranks these cards

I'm Tristyn Pawson, founder of ConsistenC.xyz. Over the last five years I've worked on marketing, development and growth across five crypto cards and neobanks, building at least three of them from scratch.

Alongside that I've run in-depth research on 20+ crypto banks to understand what actually makes someone keep a card in their wallet. These rankings reflect that: which problems are tolerable, and which ones are genuine deal breakers.
