The APAC Neobank Growth Hack.

The APAC Neobank Growth Hack.

Another 20 crypto cards launched this month. But few are thinking out of the box. Out of 300+ Crypto Cards, only a handful are offering QR payments, but they should - let me explain.

In Southeast Asia alone, digital payments recently crossed the $1 trillion mark. QR payments are accepted by more merchants than debit cards.

Why? Well, a street vendor in Jakarta just needs a printed paper sticker to accept a digital payment. They don't want hardware costs or merchant fees.

But instead of getting each merchant to onboard into the crypto space, platforms like Oobit, Kazepay, RedotPay, and a handful of others are working directly with the QR payment systems the people already use. Every crypto card looking at APAC has to include this. Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, China, India, Malaysia, and many others rely on QR payments.

The mechanics are straightforward:

  • The Scan: A user opens a supported app and scans the merchant's local QR code.
  • The Conversion: The app debits the user's stablecoin balance, such as USDT or USDC, in real-time.
  • The Settlement: The merchant receives local fiat currency instantly through local rails without ever knowing or caring that the payment originated as crypto.

It costs them nothing to set up and fractions of a percent to settle.

Trying to force Western payment infrastructure onto emerging markets is an uphill battle. Traditional card rails require costly point-of-sale hardware, high merchant discount rates, and legacy acquiring banks. If a crypto card project wants to capture volume in high-growth corridors where digital payments dwarf Western markets, physical plastic is secondary. The real product is a camera scanning a paper sticker on a shop counter.

Crypto cards that already have this include: Oobit (Just announced Vietnam + Brazil), KazePay (Vietnam + Indonesia), RedotPay (Thailand), Valr/Honey Badger (South Africa), PWC Super App (Thailand), Pexx (Thailand).

Who ranks these cards

I'm Tristyn Pawson, founder of ConsistenC.xyz. Over the last five years I've worked on marketing, development and growth across five crypto cards and neobanks, building at least three of them from scratch.

Alongside that I've run in-depth research on 20+ crypto banks to understand what actually makes someone keep a card in their wallet. These rankings reflect that: which problems are tolerable, and which ones are genuine deal breakers.
